BIM models developed with point cloud modeling, can minimize budget overruns

Budget overruns used to be very prominent or obvious in renovation and refurbishment projects, wherein gathering project information was not that easy.  Before the existence and inception of Scan to BIM services, design and construction professionals had to work round the clock, for the successful extraction of information from the existing building. AEC professionals such as architects and engineers had to make many visits to the renovation site even for small doubts. Before the application of scan to BIM, AEC professionals had to perform a manual survey of the property for measuring its correct dimensions for developing drawings.  But the effectiveness of these drawings always used to be doubted by architects and engineers as manual survey was prone to human errors.

Renovation projects used to involve a lot of complications, which ultimately resulted into budget overruns. Due to high complications rework was obvious and budget overruns are the consequences of that.

But budget overruns of renovation projects have drastically decreased, after the implementation of scan to BIM process, wherein error-free building data is collected through laser scanning techniques. Error free building data is highly important for the successful execution of these projects, as implementation of right information during renovation can reduce rework.  Laser scanning technology is used by many industries for increasing their productivity and AEC industry has also implemented it for the same. Laser scanning saves a lot of time as it provides architects and engineers with correct building geometry which can be used by BIM modelers during BIM modeling services.

Laser scanners can scan each and every part of the building in details and can extract accurate existing conditions of the building in question. Laser beams directed from laser scanners reach deep inside the structure and capture tremendously factual information that is necessary for project execution. Building information is incorporated in point clouds which are brought by laser beams when they come back after examining the building. For a thorough examination of the building, scans are captured for different parts from different angles. Scans captured for different sides and from different angles are clubbed together by the survey team for the ultimate purpose of acquiring comprehensive information. This data is now delivered to an eminent service providing company which creates immensely informative and powerful BIM models from it.

By executing point cloud modeling, Revit users can develop informative BIM models for architecture, structure and MEP, which can assist AEC professionals when they carry out renovation on the proposed location. As accurate information about design, construction and operations can be obtained from these models, they can help in minimizing budget overruns.

A brief account on BIM’s expansion over the years

Building Information Modeling has a dramatic history when it comes to its expansion in the landscapes of AEC industry over the years. BIM which is also known as Virtual Design and Construction has a dominant presence in AEC industry because of the fact that is has the potential to realize project outcomes and can control them significantly as per requirement. In short design and construction professionals can attain superior control over project outcomes by analyzing multidiscipline models. Well, Building Information Modeling evolved as a concept some four decades ago but it was not practiced by AEC professionals in the industry at that time. For approximately ten years since it first appeared in the journal, the term ‘BIM’ used to be seen only in research papers. BIM as a technology and a process started to be implemented in construction projects some thirty years ago. So once AEC professionals started using BIM in construction they never looked back to their sluggish performanc...

Determine the size of your family according to your project requirement in Revit!

Revit is considered the best choice by architects, engineers, BIM modelers and technicians working in AEC industry for creating families. Families are basically used by BIM modelers while executing Revit modeling services. That makes Revit and Revit modeling services an integral part of construction project execution. Family size matters a lot when it comes to designing a building. In Revit technicians have the luxury to control family size as per the requirement of their project. If in case a smaller size door is required for one of the rooms in the building it can be easily created by using the Family Editor tool of Revit. Revit Family Editor has vital features for developing custom families. The Family size can be controlled by BIM modelers by assigning required dimensions for the family.   In other words the geometry of the family can be easily controlled by assigning parameters in Revit. Take an example of door family; it’s up to Revit modelers what dimensions they want ...

Structural drawings: What is the role of Revit structure and Tekla Structure in their development?

Among all kinds of construction drawings it is really difficult to develop structural drawings as they are of highly complex nature. For developing strong and durable structural framework, the first step is to develop high quality structural drawings which can effectively describe structural design.  For the comprehensive understanding of structural design numerous kinds of technical drawings which may include detailed sketches, plans and working drawings etc have to be developed by drafters and detailers on the instructions of structural engineers.   In this blog I would like to focus on the development of Steel fabrication drawings and erection drawings which are created by steel detailers when they execute Structural Steel Detailing Services with the support of Revit structure or Tekla Structure.    Both Revit structure and Tekla structure are most widely used software packages which are utilized by steel detailers for the development of d...
