Revit Family Editor: Why is it so important for AEC professionals?

Revit Family Editor is a very important tool in Revit which helps architects, engineers and BIM modelers in developing families that are crucial for them while generating 3D models. When it comes to its appearance Revit Family Editor resembles a lot to Project Environment in Revit. Same as Project Environment, Family Editor is also a graphical mode in Revit meant for creating different geometrical shapes and sizes for developing a family. The only difference between the two is they both possess different tools. In other words there is a huge difference between the tools of Project Environment and Family Editor.

Family Editor has much more potential when it comes to developing Revit families. Geometry of the families created with the assistance of Family Editor can be fully controlled by their parameters. That means, you can develop families as per your choice when it comes to their shape and size. And that is a great luxury for technicians or modelers since they can execute their Revit project as per the requirement of clients. If in case a client wants large doors and windows for his house then technicians can easily develop such families by optimizing Revit Family Editor.

Family Editor’s distinctive and eccentric features and tools makes Revit one of the most favorite software for developing families as well as 3D models for building systems such as architecture, structure and MEP.

Its family editor tools such as Family Type tool, Model line tool, Dimensions tools and Reference Plane and Reference line tools are very important for creating effective families in Revit.  Family Types tool is very essential for selecting a family type while creating a family however Reference plane and Reference line tools are optimized for drawing a Reference plane and Reference lines for a family.

Its dimension tools are critical for assigning suitable dimensions for a family. Its Void forms tool and Section tool are also very important for Revit users since they assist them in creating void in a family and section view respectively.

So in short due to its unique tools Revit Family Editor has the potential of creating highly accurate families.

A brief account on BIM’s expansion over the years

Building Information Modeling has a dramatic history when it comes to its expansion in the landscapes of AEC industry over the years. BIM which is also known as Virtual Design and Construction has a dominant presence in AEC industry because of the fact that is has the potential to realize project outcomes and can control them significantly as per requirement. In short design and construction professionals can attain superior control over project outcomes by analyzing multidiscipline models. Well, Building Information Modeling evolved as a concept some four decades ago but it was not practiced by AEC professionals in the industry at that time. For approximately ten years since it first appeared in the journal, the term ‘BIM’ used to be seen only in research papers. BIM as a technology and a process started to be implemented in construction projects some thirty years ago. So once AEC professionals started using BIM in construction they never looked back to their sluggish performanc...

Determine the size of your family according to your project requirement in Revit!

Revit is considered the best choice by architects, engineers, BIM modelers and technicians working in AEC industry for creating families. Families are basically used by BIM modelers while executing Revit modeling services. That makes Revit and Revit modeling services an integral part of construction project execution. Family size matters a lot when it comes to designing a building. In Revit technicians have the luxury to control family size as per the requirement of their project. If in case a smaller size door is required for one of the rooms in the building it can be easily created by using the Family Editor tool of Revit. Revit Family Editor has vital features for developing custom families. The Family size can be controlled by BIM modelers by assigning required dimensions for the family.   In other words the geometry of the family can be easily controlled by assigning parameters in Revit. Take an example of door family; it’s up to Revit modelers what dimensions they want ...

Structural drawings: What is the role of Revit structure and Tekla Structure in their development?

Among all kinds of construction drawings it is really difficult to develop structural drawings as they are of highly complex nature. For developing strong and durable structural framework, the first step is to develop high quality structural drawings which can effectively describe structural design.  For the comprehensive understanding of structural design numerous kinds of technical drawings which may include detailed sketches, plans and working drawings etc have to be developed by drafters and detailers on the instructions of structural engineers.   In this blog I would like to focus on the development of Steel fabrication drawings and erection drawings which are created by steel detailers when they execute Structural Steel Detailing Services with the support of Revit structure or Tekla Structure.    Both Revit structure and Tekla structure are most widely used software packages which are utilized by steel detailers for the development of d...
