In the beginning when architects, engineers and
contractors came to know that they can also utilize laser scanning technology
for measuring the dimensions of the building they were shocked to a great
extent. They never imagined that building construction would also become such
high-tech activity one day, wherein highly advanced and unconventional tools
such as 3D laser scanners and building design software products like Revit
would be used by them for developing a building. Since architects, engineers,
general contractors and building owners were only familiar with manual survey
process when it comes to gathering the existing conditions of an old building
in context of renovation, they found it extremely alarming to implement 3D
laser scanning for measuring building dimensions.
The manual survey process required Architecture,
Engineering and Construction drawings professionals to visit the actual site and then take the
measurement of the building. This was very difficult as well as time taking
process, wherein most of the cases surveyors used to commit huge mistakes in
measuring the dimensions which ultimately used to create too many problems for
architects and engineers.
But laser scanning technology came as a blessing for
architects and engineers, who could now get accurate information about the
building through laser scanners. For proceeding with laser scanning process
surveyors are required to install or situate 3D laser scanners near the
building which can help them in extracting correct building data. This building
data which is extracted during the survey process is known as point cloud data
and it is used by architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers and technicians
for developing 3D parametric models which can be ultimately used when actual
renovation takes place.
BIM authoring tool which is used by architects,
engineers and BIM modelers for the
construction of architectural, structural and MEP models is known as Revit. Autodesk is the developer
of all the Revit disciplines which include Revit Architecture, Revit Structure
and Revit MEP. Since these models are
developed digitally in Revit’s conceptual design environment and its project
environment, it does not take much time for BIM technicians to accomplish them.
And all this finally simplifies the execution of renovation projects.
