BIM coordination is consequential for developing accurate buildings

What is BIM coordination? Well, BIM coordination is nothing but the clubbing of architecture, structure and MEP models into one single model.  This model is known as BIM coordination model. Building construction is one of the most complicated tasks as the development of different building disciplines remains the responsibility of diverse engineers.  Architects, structural engineers and MEP engineers are jointly accountable for developing building design.  A building’s architecture is totally designed by an architect whereas its structural framework is outlined by structural engineers. And when it comes to the designing of MEP systems they are designed by mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers.

Since the design of multiple building disciplines is created by various different kinds of engineers there always remains a question mark in terms of their harmonious coexistence. And to get clarity about design inconsistencies between multidiscipline models in terms of their coexistence, BIM coordination services are executed.

Clash detection process can be understood or considered as the primary step of BIM coordination process. That means architectural, structural and MEP models are examined for clashes between them. Navisworks remains one of the most instrumental tools in the hands of modelers and technicians for carrying out clash detection process. So the first step that is taken by the modelers while conducting clash tests is to import all the vital Revit files belonging to architectural, structural and MEP models in Navisworks. Now the next step is to convert these files into Navisworks file formats which can be effectively read by the model review software. Navisworks has a unique mechanism when it comes to detecting clashes that means when the clash tests are conducted on different model elements and when the software finds any clashes between them it quickly highlights them. Clashes detected between different model elements are highlighted with the use of colors. For viewing identified clashes modelers are required to access Results tab. So once the clashes become familiar to modelers they begin to provide solutions for them.

In short when clashes identified between multidiscipline models are provided with suitable solutions, different models are quickly clubbed together.  Coordination of different BIM models results into a single BIM coordination model. This BIM coordination model is highly immaculate when it comes to design inconsistencies.

A brief account on BIM’s expansion over the years

Building Information Modeling has a dramatic history when it comes to its expansion in the landscapes of AEC industry over the years. BIM which is also known as Virtual Design and Construction has a dominant presence in AEC industry because of the fact that is has the potential to realize project outcomes and can control them significantly as per requirement. In short design and construction professionals can attain superior control over project outcomes by analyzing multidiscipline models. Well, Building Information Modeling evolved as a concept some four decades ago but it was not practiced by AEC professionals in the industry at that time. For approximately ten years since it first appeared in the journal, the term ‘BIM’ used to be seen only in research papers. BIM as a technology and a process started to be implemented in construction projects some thirty years ago. So once AEC professionals started using BIM in construction they never looked back to their sluggish performanc...

Tackle positioning issues favorably by sharing coordinates!

Tackling file positioning issues rationally and conveniently remains major problem for Revit users when they link additional file in their model or project. Multiple discrepancies are confronted by Revit users in terms of geometrical positioning of linked files comparative to host model. For example if an MEP engineer working on his model in Revit MEP wants to acquire a thorough understanding of  structural model developed in Revit structure by structural engineer he has to link the model. So when MEP engineer links a structural model in his MEP model, Revit spontaneously displays and alert informing users that linked model does not acquire the same coordinate system as host model. And since they do not share the same coordinate systems, Revit will automatically return back to center-to-center positioning. The alert confronted by users must be cancelled by them at this point of time because positioning associated issues can only be tackled once the file is imported in the mod...

MEP systems provide the momentum to the building

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are incredibly crucial for any sort of building, be it residential, commercial or industrial.   The design for these systems is prepared by MEP modelers who have vast experience in the execution of BIM modeling services.  They develop design for MEP systems in Revit MEP software which is quintessentially dedicated to the design development of MEP systems only. MEP systems consist of HVAC systems, electrical systems and plumbing systems. Detailed explanation of these systems is following  HVAC Systems These systems comprise of heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems. HVAC systems have to be accurate since they are responsible for the circulation of various resources. The design of these systems must be created in a way that they reach to every part of the building where they supposed to reach. They are utilized in all kinds of building projects as well as non building projects such as in...
